Every card has a passive NFC chip — no battery, no electronics to wear out. When you hold the card against the top of a phone, the phone's NFC reader powers the chip long enough for it to send your HeyDrop URL back. The phone opens your profile in its browser. It takes under a second.
iPhone XS and newer (iOS 14+) read NFC automatically with the screen on — no app, no settings. Every Android released in the last decade supports NFC by default. If the person's phone is older or has NFC disabled, your card has a printed QR code as a fallback.
No and no. Your card opens their browser. Your HeyDrop profile page does the rest — they can save your contact card (vCard), call, email or follow you from the page. Nothing to install on either side.
The metal and wood variants are 0.8 mm thick like a bank card, so they live in a wallet fine. The laser engraving is burnt into the material, not printed on top — it can't rub off. The NFC chip is sealed between layers and rated for tens of thousands of taps.
